ABK’s Guide to Pet’s Coat Care: Shampoos and Conditioners for Pets

Choosing shampoo for our pets more of a tough choice than one would imagine. We also have to think of whether to buy a regular pet shampoo or a flea and tick shampoo if they’re spending more time scratching away at irritations. No one pet is alike and all dogs and cats come from an array of breeds as well as some types which aren’t officially classified.

We realize the options to choose from incredibly confusing. So, let's try and manage and break down what to use, and when to use them.

Flea & Tick Shampoo for Pets

Flea and tick shampoo is one category that need special attention. Firstly, even individual dogs of the same breed can have varying skin sensitivities and have allergies. Therefore we always advise you to consult your vet before using any shampoo on your dog or cat, even regular ones.

An important information to keep in mind is that off-the-shelf shampoos for pets contain less potent, yet very effective natural extracts such as tea-tree, lemongrass, eucalyptus or cedar wood oils are mostly effective for mild tick & flea infestations. For infections, irritations and other skin conditions there special medicated pet shampoos which are prescribed by licensed veterinary professionals.

Coat Specific Shampoos for Pets

We all know that cats and dogs come in several coat types. Some with long coats, with short coats, and varying thickness. All coats have to be treated in a different way to ensure good health of your pet’s coat.

As this  category of shampoo for pets is also non-medicated, they also contain naturally sourced ingredients like jojoba, peppermint oils and aloe extracts. These are more than enough to thoroughly cleans pets’ coats while soothing mild irritations.

Coat Enhancing Shampoos for Pets

In order of importance in the context of coat care, health & hygiene, coat enhancing shampoos may be last but they are as important. This is the penultimate step in home grooming. Once you are sure that your cat’s or dog’s coat is as healthy as it can be, these shampoos can be used to enhance natural qualities of their coats.

Coat enhancing shampoos come in coat specific formulas and just as the case with the types of shampoo we’ve discussed so far, these too are made with natural ingredients.

Finishing Off with Conditioners for Pets

Just as shampoos specifically with dogs in mind exist, the story of conditioners is no different. Brands Like Tropiclean, Biogroom, Petkin, Forbis & Trixie offer both specially formulated shampoos and conditioners for cats & dogs, and some of them even have a separate range of coat care products just for smaller animals like ferrets and hamsters.
